The EEW Maker Kit Kickstarter is officially live!
[Back the EEW Maker Kit on Kickstarter Here]
The EEW Maker Kit spins like a high-end spinning wheel because it is one, except you build this one yourself. As crafters, we all know the pride that comes from making things with our own hands, and this project brings that same feeling to your spinning wheel.
You pair your own 3D-printed parts with my hardware kit to build a custom eSpinner. I supply the core components, including the custom brushless motor, precision-machined stainless steel spindle, circuit board, bearings (enough for 5 bobbins), ceramic yarn guides, foot switch, and fasteners. Everything plugs, snaps, and screws together with no soldering or coding required.
Project Highlights
- High-End Spinning Performance: Features 8 oz bobbins (the same capacity as the EEW 6.1) and my most advanced motor controller yet. It holds a steady speed whether you are spinning fine lace or using the new ceramic yarn guides for bulky art yarn. You can also customize the soft start and stop ramps, and use the new tangle-detection feature that stops the flyer if your yarn snags.
- Easy, Beta-Tested Assembly: I worked with my largest beta-testing group ever to make sure the build is straightforward and takes less than an hour for most people.
- Open-Source Customization: All 3D parts print without supports. Beyond choosing your favorite filament colors, I am releasing the standard STL files alongside the original Autodesk Fusion CAD files so our community can design and share custom bobbins, battery holders, and upgrades.
- No 3D Printer? No Problem: If you don’t own a 3D printer or have a friend who can print the parts, I set up an Authorized Printer Network with five trusted small businesses in the US, UK, EU, and Australia/New Zealand. I sent each of them a prototype hardware kit to test-fit their prints so you can order a ready-to-assemble chassis in your favorite colors.
- Price: The standard EEW Maker Kit is $99 on Kickstarter. It will be available on my store at a higher price after I ship to the Kickstarter backers.
If you want to inspect the 3D files or read through the step-by-step Assembly Guide, Design Document, and Bill of Materials before backing, everything is already public on the EEW Maker Kit Project Page.
The hardware design is finished, the firmware is dialed in, and the 3D files are ready to print. Your pledge funds the manufacturing run so I can order these custom parts in volume and keep the price affordable. I will also be reading all Kickstarter backer comments during the campaign to do one final round of polish on the 3D files and documentation before shipping.
