Laser cut case for 5.X shield

Postby klexart » Sat Dec 17, 2011 10:01 pm

I just got a laser and was working on a case for the camera axe shield. The prototype is cut in black acrylic so it needs a cut out of the screen. What do you think?

Picked up a Morntech 3050D CO2 laser cutter / engraver last week.

I think it's pretty good. It's personal preference, but I prefer the tab and screw design used in this project better: https://www.adafruit.com/products/194

You and your laser cutters tempt me. I've been thinking about getting an epilog for years. Complete systems with all the air filters and such cost around $20K from what I've read, but I've never contacted their sales. I just can't justify that kind of money. Can you share how much you like your Morntech cutter and about how much it costs? I've also looked at services like Ponoko, but they also cost too much to make a bunch of cases. I frequently get people asking for cases to my sensors and if I had a way to make a cheap case for various sensors I'd probably offer the cases as an option.

I have used the tab and screw design before but due to material thickness i couldn't use it (the acrylic is .060" ). This was just a test run to see how that cutouts felt and fit. Going to change the material and smooth out the 90deg. cuts. Also need to find some better hardware as the screws are just something I had laying around.

As for the lasers, I have been using an Epilog for 2 years now and it is the Cadillac of cutters. I have only had the Morntech for a few days and can't speak to its long term quality (so far so good for the price). Cost: Epilog 16k+ / Morntech (from the US distro) 4K~. Laser Cooling is the big difference. Epilog is air cooled so nothing is need outside the machine / Morntech is water cooled and you need a bucket of water and a pump. A water chiller is needed if you run the machine for long periods of time (I just change the water in the bucket if it gets warm). The other thing i have noticed is the laser hours on the Morntech are rated for 3000hours and the epilog that i use has been running for 6+ years (don't know the hours) without replacing the laser or the lens.

I think i am going to lock in this version but change the clear material. The junk I got from the big box store is cracking when cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.
